Relief from Chronic Pain






According to the centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chronic pain is the leading cause of disability in the United States. Chronic pain is widely believed to represent disease itself.
Chronic pain is debilitating and often becomes the defining factor in clients' lives.
Without hope of relief they loose ability to sleep, eat and function properly, often ending
addicted to drugs, irritable and depressed.





Pain is extremely unpleasant sensation triggered by the central nervous system to let us know something is wrong, and the ability to experience pain is critical for our survival because it makes us aware of something is wrong within our body
When pain is due to the injury, once the healing process is completed, the pain response should end
However, with chronic pain the message of pain never ends. The constant pain is a mystery to researches in the chronic-pain field, and there is relative uncertainty in how to treat it.



What causes an individual to experience chronic pain? What is chronic pain?



I try to answer those question when I work with clients suffering from constant chronic pain.
I see myself as a crusader against chronic pain and see client suffering from it on everyday bases. variety of chronic pain are endless.......from chronic headaches to past injuries, where pain never really went away.
What to do in trying to help those client? Is it really possible to help with this kind of pain and lessen their suffering?

Chronic-pain clients experience an abnormal level of muscle tension caused by shortened and tight muscle tissue. When the brain perceives pain, the sympathetic nervous system is activated automatically and tightens the muscles, constrict the pupils, elevated the heart rate and slows digestion. This is our body's response when it goes into fight-or-flight mode.
This sustained muscular tension is what causes client to experience chronic pain
Chronic muscle tension of a lasting nature gradually increases in intensity.
When a muscle moves or contracts, it burns glycogen, which is supplied by the blood and lymph flow. Glycogen then stores itself in the muscle ontil it's needed.
When glycogen burns, it breaks down into a sobstance known as pyruvate. Enough oxygen must be available in the muscle to convert pyruvate to carbon dioxide and water, which are then expelled from the lungs.
When not enough oxygen is available pyruvate will convert to a toxic substance known as lactic acid. Increases and abnormal amounts od this substance in the soft tissue become known as acidosis.
When muscle is chronically tight and does not relax following its contraction, restiction of movement of the blood and lymph causes shortage of oxygen in the tissues thus acidosis result.
I always get the question about the role of deep tissue massage in chronic pain management. people want to know why deep tissue massage helps to lessen pain signals to brain.

When deep pressure is applied to the tissue suffering from acidosis, chronic muscle tissue is released by increased blood and lymph flow to the area. this provides the tissue with the nourishment it needs. ( mostly oxygen )
This increased flow will also carry waste products, such as lactic acid, out of the muscle and fascia and into bloodstream. It will be obvious that blood is flowing into the area being worked because it will turn red and produce heat.
Deep pressure massage feels good to chronic-pain clients because it releases endorphins, which are natural painkillers for the body.. With the release of these substances, the client experiences an euphoric break from his/her pain for a period of time. Notable relief is experienced after a session, and so a maintenance program of at least once a week is recommended.

Hello to all!

Who am I ? What do I do?
My name is Brian KOCUN and I am New York State licensed massage therapist, operating my own massage office in TriBeCa, New York City. I am graduate of Swedish Institute and since 2006 I had been independent massage therapist. I love my work and can not imagine to do anything else! I love my job, I meet tons of interesting people everyday, I do my best to help them. I hear stories, I see changes.......every client is special and brings his or her story when they get on my table. I respect all of them and care for them with love. That's what I do and that is what I love!
